On the 1st day of #BelatedChristmas #GoogleIE gave to me... @TypioRecovery!

Overall Review: Typio is a really slick Chrome extension I wish existed a loooong time ago.

Imagine...

The Time Crunch
You're filling out that conference proposal at 11:54 PM... The deadline's 11: 59. You're finally done! Success! Your perfect proposal is seconds away from stardom at ISTE! You click submit and - - - IT TIMED OUT!!!!  YOU LOST EVERYTHING!!!! - - -AND... CHROME JUST CRASHED!!!

All is Lost

What do you do?

If you were like me 5 years ago- you put together what you can in as quickly as possible in 3 minutes and submit as is.

Last year, after something similar had happened at least 5 times in different scenarios, I wised up and started typing my answers on Google Docs first then copying them over. I think this is the best way to go still, as when I want to see what I actually submitted, I can go back to this Doc and use this for future reference and future submissions as well.

However, I still find myself updating these when it comes time to turn in the real deal. And, I would not have a place to see these changes were the form not to be submitted successfully. Additionally, it isn't always practical to create a Google Doc- as sometimes I'm just submitting a paragraph.

Here Comes Typio Recovery

Essentially a Very Selective Keylogger You Know Exists
Typio will store what you write into an entry field in Chrome (i.e., in a Google Form, search field, etc.) for a certain amount of time in case that window is closed, the form is lost, etc.

Cool Things:

  • After playing around with it and closing some windows and force quitting Chrome a few times, I was still able to recover paragraph length text I had written into a Google Form but not submitted- exactly what I was looking for!
  • This seems perfect for my students as well

Observations:

  • You can customize how long you want Typio to save your information. Because it has permission to save everything you have typed in (this seems like a lot!), and because I only envision using it in rare occasions where I just submitted a form and it timed out- I set this to 1 day. I think if there were an option for 1 hour or even just 30 minutes, this would probably be fine
  • You can block Typio from working on certain domains
  • I'm not sure what the point of having Typio back up information on gmail.com or inside Google Docs would be given their auto save features- but, again, you can just turn this off
